Residents of Bellport Village should be aware that avian influenza, commonly known as bird flu, has been detected in the area. While primarily affecting wild birds, particularly waterfowl, the virus can pose a risk to domestic poultry and, in rare cases, other animals. We urge residents to avoid contact with sick or dead birds, and to keep pets and domestic birds away from potentially contaminated areas. Maintaining clean bird feeders and bird baths can also help minimize the risk of transmission. If you observe unusual bird deaths or suspect avian influenza, please contact the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation.
